Have you ever spent time in the sun and then wondered why you have spots on your skin that are darker than the rest? If you have, you’re experiencing what dermatologists call hyperpigmentation. But what is hyperpigmentation? Can you get rid of those dark spots and achieve the royal skin you deserve?
Yes, you can.
What Is Hyperpigmentation?
I created Pretty Biznez to help people with exactly this type of problem. Hyperpigmentation can affect you anywhere on the body, but some of the most common issues I’ve seen involve rough, dark skin on the elbows, knees, armpits, cleavage, and buttocks (don’t get cheeky, now). While it’s not exactly harmful to have hyperpigmentation, it’s not really appealing, either.
So, you’re probably wondering: what is hyperpigmentation? Essentially, when hyperpigmentation occurs, it’s a sign that too much melanin has been produced in the affected area. Why? Well, for many reasons, actually. As noted above, sun exposure plays a role. But other reasons include changes in the production of hormones—for instance, during pregnancy or when taking birth control pills. All of the factors can combine to create a lot of hyperpigmentation, for women and men alike.
How to Get Rid of Dark Spots
If you’ve got hyperpigmentation, you probably want to know how you can treat and prevent it from happening in the future. First, let’s talk prevention.
The sun is the primary culprit that causes hyperpigmentation, so limiting your time in direct sunlight can do wonders for prevention. Hormone production can also influence your susceptibility to hyperpigmentation. There’s not a lot you can do to regulate your hormones besides practicing stress reduction techniques like meditation and yoga. If birth control is causing your hormones to go out of whack, be sure to ask your doctor if these effects are long-lasting or just temporary and whether you have any alternative options.
But what is hyperpigmentation prevention going to do for the dark spots I already have?
That’s a good question. The answer? Not much. You’ll have to find some treatment options for that.
Luckily, you’ve come to the right place. There are several different treatment options for hyperpigmentation. What I’ve found is that one of them does really well for evening skin tones and cleansing skin at the same time. Kojic acid, which I’ve written about before, is created as a by-product during sake (rice wine) production—pretty cool, huh? Essentially, the bacteria that is used in the fermentation process also bring about this wonderful little acid. The Japanese use kojic acid in many of their skincare products.
Unlike other skin-toning acids, kojic acid is 100% effective. It’s a bit harsher on the skin than other skincare acids, but when you see the results, you’ll know that it was worth it.
