The ABCs of Summer Skincare: A Royal Guide to Maintaining that Skinsual Glow

Skincare in the summer is no joke, sis — no matter what your skin tone is.

Don’t listen to rumors that those with dark complexions don’t need protection from the sun. Lighter skin might burn more easily, but darker skin is just as vulnerable to other issues, like uneven skin tones, acne flare ups, and damage from sun exposure. And too much sun can stop that richer skin of yours from producing necessary amounts of Vitamin D.

Do I really need to wear sunscreen?

There’s a lot of misinformation out there, so let me clear some things up for you.

SPF is a must, whether your skin is dark and bronze or pale like rose gold. You should be wearing sunscreen every day as part of your summer skincare routine. As a skincare expert, this is one of the most important things I stress to Pretty Biznez customers.

Even a short time in the sun can cause damage, so make sure you are protecting yourself with sunscreen. It might not seem like it, but just walking to the mailbox to get your latest Pretty Biznez order can cause damage to your skin.

So how can you protect your skin this summer?

Here are the ABCs to my favorite summer skincare tips, to help you keep that skinsual glow.

With love,
     Ambi :)

Apply everywhere, every day, and often

Yes, you should be wearing sunscreen daily, but don’t just put it on and forget it. And make sure to cover all of your royal skin, from head to feet (yes, even your ears!). Reapply often, at least every two hours. And don’t trust that “water-resistant” or “sweat-resistant” means it won’t wear off.

Boost that H20 intake

Drink up! For real, one of the best ways to keep royal, lush skin (all year long) is to stay hydrated. It’s even more important in the summer. Why? When you’re out in the heat, your body is more susceptible to dehydration and that can negatively affect your skin. Try to drink about 8 to 10 glasses of water a day and eat foods that boost hydration, like celery, cucumbers, and melons.

C (as in the vitamin)

What’s the tea on Vitamin C? The truth is, sunscreen isn’t 100 proof. It only blocks about 55% of UV exposure. But using Vitamin C with sunscreen has been shown to be more effective at minimizing sun damage. Vitamin C also happens to be a key ingredient in many of our Pretty Biznez products, including our new Skinsual Vitamin C serum, which will help hydrate and even out your skin -- all year round.

Don’t forget lip service

Lips are one of the most overlooked areas for summer skincare. You might not get chapped lips in the summer, but you’re still at risk for UV damage to that pout. So do your lips a favor and make sure you’re wearing an SPF 30 lip balm so you can keep those lips lush.

Exfoliate, sis!

Exfoliating is life in the Pretty Biznez dynasty. In the summer, it’s important not to over-exfoliate because you can weaken your skin’s protective layer. This can cause it to become inflamed and irritated, leaving it open to bacteria and sun damage. Make sure you use a gentle exfoliation cloth or glove, like the ones in our Pretty Biznez bundles. And always scrub gently, then follow up with a moisturizing cream or serum, like our PB Beauty Cream

But Ambi, what SPF should I use?

Most dermatologists recommend using at least an SPF 30 to protect your complexion and avoid burning. Of course, just because you’re wearing sunscreen, doesn’t mean your skin is completely protected. So be smart and wear a hat (have you seen our Skinsual hat??) or stay in the shade, if possible. And make sure you dress to impress and protect -- which means loose-fitting, breathable clothing that covers that royal skin of yours.
